Fun and excitement at Mullingar club's Open Day

Mullingar Town Football Club hosted a family fun day at their grounds in D’Alton Park on Saturday where sweltering sunshine greeted a large number of children, parents and volunteers.

There was a great level of interest in the day’s activities from people of all ages and the effort of the Mullingar Town Club to engage with the local community in such a positive way was really appreciated.

“It’s an open day for the whole community. Mullingar Town, over its many years here, has always been about engaging the whole community and that’s what this event is all about. It’s about giving something back, an appreciation from the club for those who support us all year,” explained Derek Irwin, committee member.

There were free burgers and ice cream for the all, the latter proving very popular in the warm weather. There were bouncing castles and inflatables available for all the age groups. There were five-a-side games running during the morning and there was great interaction from all the youth.

On the club’s astroturf pitch, there were inflatable courses for the smaller children to enjoy and it was a very popular location. Later the adults played a fun match, with past and present players getting involved.

The Mullingar Town Club currently has youth teams from U8/9 up to U15 level. After three years’ hard work and a renewed focus on the underage, they have developed from U13 to include U15 players and there is an U16 team entering in the winter league later this season. It’s about continued development and feeding into the adult grade, ensuring the grass roots continue to thrive.

“That will feed into a strong adult club in time,” explained Derek.

The club has an astroturf facility and have renovated their main pitch, resewing grass and improving the surface. There are other projects planned over the next six months to further enhance their fine facilities.

“The more members we can get involved, the more we can do to enhance what we already have,” said Derek.

The club is currently in the summer break and the Meath and District League will begin in October and the new season will then kickstart fully in December. Fergus Murphy is club chairperson and he was busily involved on the burger stall for most of the day.
