The Golden Years Club in Raharney hosted an extra special meeting for their last gathering before the summer break when they celebrated Mary Crowe’s 100th birthday last Wednesday.
Mary’s birthday is August 18, and club members wanted to mark it beforehand, as they don’t hold their biweekly gatherings in August.
Mary was the guest of honour, and the invite was extended to members of her family, who travelled to Raharney for the day, and to local clergy including Fr Stan Deegan, PP, Killucan Raharney, and Fr Frank Monks and Bro John O’Brien, St Camillus, Killucan (where Mary has resided in recent months). All were delighted to see Fr Stan, but Fr Frank and Bro John were unable to be present, due to work pressures and illness.
Regular members of the Golden Years Club were there in numbers, and one important guest on the day was Mary’s close friend, Mary Mulvaney.
Mary Crowe moved to Raharney from Dublin some years ago and has been an active member of the community since.
She is full of life and fun, and likes telling jokes, even risqué ones at times. When she first moved to the area, she used her knitting skills to make Santa and Mrs Claus figures, which she gave to other club members for their grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren in more recent years.
She loves her game of bingo, and a lot of the time, doesn’t even wear glassed when
playing it. A special card with a photo of Mary as a young woman plus €100 in cash were gifted to Mary from the Golden Years Club and there was a delicious birthday cake for all to enjoy, and flowers for Mary to take home.
Golden Years Club meetings start again on September 9 at 11am and continue every other Wednesday.
