Range of actions to improve road safety in Killucan and Rathwire area in pipeline

A range of actions aimed at improving safety on the roads of Killucan and Rathwire are in the pipeline, Cllrs David Jones and Emily Wallace were assured, when – individually – they raised concerns at the July meeting of the Kinnegad Mullingar Municipal District.

Cllr Jones’s request was that the traffic calming measures already in place that area be reviewed with a view to installing further measures.

Cllr Wallace asked for the installation of a ramp at the new Centra Shop in Rathwire, where, she said, speeding was an ongoing concern for people.

The written response from council officials stated that there are two SRTS (Safe Routes To School) projects planned, at St Joseph’s National School, Rathwire and Columba College Killucan. “Both those projects will enhance the traffic calming measures by improving existing pedestrian crossings, installation of new speed ramps, build-outs. New school zone signage and road markings will increase driver awareness and help reduce traffic speed coming into both Killucan and Rathwire villages,” the item read.

Concluding, it reminded the members that the district had carried out a safety scheme in Killucan in 2025 at the R156/L1007 junction (main road from The Downs to Killucan): “A table-top ramp was installed to slow traffic at that location and is working well.”

Cllr Wallace said that response did not address the specific problems at the new Centra , and between the shop and the church and at the health centre.
