Push for local ads quota on bus shelters

A call to have a certain number of advertising slots on any new bus shelters going into this area reserved for local businesses has gained the support of councillors in the Mullingar Kinnegad Municipal District.

At the July meeting, Cllr Emily Wallace proposed that officials engage with the NTA (National Transport Authority) to secure dedicated local advertising quotas on newly installed bus shelters, to which the official response from the district stated that a letter could be issued to the NTA on the subject. The district explained that the new bus shelters are being provided by JCDecaux under a contractual agreement with the NTA.

“I know that the NTA contract is out of our direct control, but these shelters sit on our footpaths in our villages and serve our local citizens and visitors. We have the leverage to ask for a community benefits clause within their contracts,” said Cllr Wallace, who received the backing of Cllrs Ken Glynn, Denis Leonard, Julie McCourt, Bill Collentine, Alfie Devine and the mayor, Cllr Niall Gaffney.

Cllr Wallace also asked that the Chamber of Commerce be made aware of the proposal.
