Mullingar celebrates runner-up award in Ireland’s Best Kept Towns Competition 2026

Mullingar is celebrating being awarded runner-up in the Large Urban Centre Category of the Ireland’s Best Kept Towns Competition 2026, one of the most prestigious community and environmental awards in Ireland.

Mullingar earned its nomination thanks to its performance in the 2025 SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition.

The Ireland’s Best Kept Towns Competition is an all-island initiative jointly supported by the Dept of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht and the Northern Ireland Amenity Council.

Mullingar competed in the Large Urban Centre category alongside Antrim, Lisburn and Galway City.

Cllr Bill Collentine praised the collective effort of residents, businesses, community organisations, schools and volunteers whose commitment helped showcase the best of the town. “This award is a tremendous honour for Mullingar and reflects the pride, dedication and community spirit that exists throughout our town. To be recognised at an all-island level is a fantastic achievement and is a testament to the hard work of our volunteers, local businesses, residents and community groups who continuously strive to make Mullingar a welcoming, vibrant and attractive place to live, work and visit.”

The award highlights the significant work undertaken across the town to enhance streetscapes, maintain public spaces, improve biodiversity areas and ensure high standards of presentation throughout Mullingar.

Judges assessed entrants on a range of criteria including cleanliness, the appearance of buildings, public facilities, roads and the natural environment.

Mullingar Tidy Towns also acknowledged the ongoing support of Westmeath County Council, local enterprises, sporting organisations, schools and voluntary groups whose collaboration continues to contribute to the town’s success.

The achievement further strengthens Mullingar’s reputation as one of Ireland’s most attractive and community-minded urban centres and builds on many years of success in national and regional environmental and community competitions.

As Mullingar celebrates this significant accomplishment, the community remains committed to enhancing the town and building on this success in future competitions.
