Strong Mullingar RFC representation at IRFU U16 Development Blitz
Mullingar RFC enjoyed a significant presence at the recent IRFU Under-16 Development Blitz, with nine of the club’s players selected to represent the Midlands panel at Buccaneers RFC in Athlone.
The development event brought together regional squads from across Ireland, providing talented young players with the opportunity to test themselves against some of the country’s best emerging rugby talent. The blitz forms an important part of the IRFU’s player development pathway for girls’ rugby, helping to identify and nurture future representative players.
Representing Mullingar RFC on the 22-player Midlands squad were Sophie Farrell, Lyra Harrington, Mia Lambden, Ciara Wiseman, Clodagh Gallagher, Ava Carroll, Ruby Brennan, Sarah Gallagher and Kayleigh Canning. Their selection highlights the strength and depth of the club’s thriving girls’ section and the quality of coaching and development taking place at underage level.
The club’s contribution to the regional panel was particularly noteworthy given that several other Mullingar players were unavailable for selection due to holidays and injury. Their absence underlines the impressive depth of talent currently emerging through the club’s youth ranks and points to a bright future for girls’ rugby in Mullingar.
Competing against teams from across the island offered the players valuable experience in a high-performance environment, while also providing an opportunity to showcase their skills alongside the best young players in the Midlands region.
The strong representation at the development blitz reflects the continued growth of girls’ rugby within Mullingar RFC, where participation levels have increased steadily in recent years. The club’s success in producing players capable of competing at regional level is a testament to the commitment of its coaches, volunteers and players.
