Explore 100 years of Kilbeggan households for Heritage Week

‘Istigh sa Teach: 100 years of Kilbeggan Households’ – one of the local events for National Heritage Week 2026 – aims to tell the story of the families who once lived in the town.

Kilbeggan Town Team have organised the event and describe it as an outdoor heritage trail on people who lived in Kilbeggan households in 1926.

Forty homes along Main Street will display illustrated plaques created in collaboration with current residents, bringing local history to life in a visual and accessible way.

The event begins this Sunday August 16 at 5.30pm at The Square with a short introduction, followed by a guided walk along Main Street, concluding with an opportunity for the community to reflect and share memories.

A spokesperson for Kilbeggan Town Team said: “The community support has been remarkable. Every conversation, old photograph, and memory shared has helped us rebuild a picture of Kilbeggan in 1926.

"We’re really looking forward to the heritage walk and to showing everyone the households that shaped Main Street a century ago.”

Kilbeggan Town Team members Aisling Twohill, Shauna Ryan and Fiona Kiernan, and Main Street resident Ciara Slammon, have worked on the project since the end of June, and designed and created more than 30 house plaques.

They held an information gathering session in Kilbeggan Library and many residents and community members visited and contributed hugely to the project.
