Oisin and Jack shine on European stage
Mullingar Harriers athletes Oisin Lane and Jack O’Leary can be extremely proud of their performances at the European T&F Championships in Birmingham, where both produced impressive results on the senior European stage.
It was an early 7.30am start last Saturday for Oisin Lane as he lined up for the half marathon race walk. Held on a tight, looped course through Birmingham city centre, the race featured more than 100 athletes, with the men’s and women’s events taking place alongside the marathon race walk.
The early start meant temperatures were not at their highest, although conditions remained warm. With large crowds lining the course, including a terrific contingent of Irish supporters and a strong number from Mullingar Harriers, the atmosphere was electric as the athletes repeatedly passed the cheering spectators.
Oisin stuck firmly to his race plan, carefully negotiating the tight turns, uphill and downhill sections and varying surfaces, all while remaining under the close scrutiny of the judges. He stayed around the middle of the field for much of the race before making his move over the closing kilometres.
His strong finish saw him cross the line in a brilliant 11th place in 1:27.09. Even more impressively, the performance was a personal best by a remarkable four minutes, underlining just how significant an achievement it was.
Later that evening, attention turned to the Alexander Stadium for the 10,000m, where Jack O’Leary lined up alongside 24 other competitors in warm conditions.
The near-capacity crowd created a terrific atmosphere, with the large Irish contingent producing a spine-tingling roar when Jack was introduced. Competing in his first European senior track championships, Jack quickly settled into the race and remained firmly in the thick of the action.
He wisely ignored a mid-race surge from a small group that would eventually contest the medals, instead concentrating on maintaining his position. With 3km remaining, Jack moved to the front of the chasing pack and pushed the pace.
Roared on by the Irish supporters, he continued to battle all the way to the finish, crossing the line in an excellent 10th place in 28:24.89, a season’s best.
Both Oisin and Jack can take enormous pride in their performances at the highest level of European athletics.
Their Birmingham experiences will undoubtedly provide further motivation as they look ahead to future European and World Championships.
