Devine to continue pressure to have more speed ramps on Castlepollard roads

A promise that he will continue to push for more ramps for Castlepollard was made at July’s meeting of the Municipal District of Mullingar Kinnegad by Cllr Alfie Devine, who was reacting to the district’s response to his request for an update on any traffic calming measures for Castlepollard.

That response stated that two ramps are to be placed on approaches to Castlepollard as part of the current programme of works following the completion of surface dressing works.

“Castlepollard has been sort of left out, I suppose, in the rural traffic calming measures for villages to a point, so I’m getting lots of calls for all the different roadways leading into Castlepollard,” Cllr Devine told the meeting.

He said that the areas most often mentioned to him were the Granard Road, the Coole Road and the Finea Road, and went on to state that another problem area was around the hurling field, where, he said, motorists are travelling at up to 80, 90 kilometres an hour and turning the area into a death trap.

While welcoming the announcement that two ramps are coming, Cllr Devine said he will be pushing for more – “until all the roads are complete”.

Whitehall

At the same meeting, Cllr Devine sought an update on when the traffic calming measures are to be installed at Whitehall. To this, the response from the district stated that traffic calming there would be considered as part of the future works estimates.

Praising recent resurfacing work at the church and the school, he said a priority there for the last couple of years has been to get traffic calming outside of the school.

“There have been several accidents at the school over the last couple of years, and again, it’s all down to speeding,” he said.

Kiltoom

A request that he be provided with an update on the proposed drainage works at upper Kiltoom Castlepollard was made at the same meeting by Cllr Devine and he was informed that the district will be liaising with the adjoining landowner to solve ongoing drainage issues.

“Work will commence in the coming weeks,” the response concluded.

Flooding

There was also a positive response to Cllr Devine’s request that the district consider installing flood alleviating works at Boherquill and Clonmore /Milkernagh where, he said, the roads in question are regularly flooding.

The response stated that the drainage at this location will be examined in the coming days to determine what works are required.

“Any necessary works will be considered as part of future work estimates,” Cllr Devine was assured.
