Upgrade plans for Castletown Geoghegan pitch
Plans have been lodged for the enlargement and upgrading of an existing playing pitch at Castletown Geoghegan Hurling Club, in a development aimed at improving sporting facilities for the local community.
The planning application has been submitted for Páirc Mhic Eochagain, Ballaghy, Castletown Geoghegan, and proposes a significant upgrade of the pitch located in the south-western portion of the club grounds.
The works will include the enlargement of the existing playing pitch, along with the installation of ball-stop netting and associated support poles.
Floodlighting is also proposed, which would allow the facility to be used for training and games during the darker months and provide greater flexibility for the club and its members.
The plans also include the construction of a pedestrian walkway around the pitch, with associated lighting poles, as well as new perimeter fencing and gates.
Team dugouts are also proposed as part of the development, together with all associated site development and ancillary works.
The application has been submitted on behalf of Castletown Geoghegan Hurling Club by Felipe Kienen, Project Manager with ORS.
In the planning documentation, the club states that the proposed works are intended solely to provide social, recreational and sporting facilities for the benefit of people living in the local area.
The club is a voluntary, non-profit community organisation and, as a result, the application states that it qualifies for an exemption from planning application fees under Article 157 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001, as amended.
Supporting documentation confirming the club’s eligibility for the exemption has been included with the application.
The planning application was received by Westmeath County Council on September 4, 2026.
The proposed improvements would provide Castletown Geoghegan Hurling Club with an enhanced and more accessible playing facility, including improved lighting, spectator and player safety measures and upgraded infrastructure.
The application will now proceed through the planning process, during which submissions and observations can be made before Westmeath County Council makes a decision.
