Appeal lodged over Killucan roof truss manufacturer

A planning application for the expansion of a roof truss manufacturing business in Killucan has been appealed to An Coimisiún Pleanála, meaning the final decision on the proposed development will now rest with the national planning authority.

The application by Ray Smyth Roof Trusses Ltd relates to a site in Killucan, Westmeath, where the company is seeking permission for a new timber truss fabrication building and associated works.

Westmeath County Council granted permission for the development on July 22, 2026, subject to conditions.

However, the decision has now been challenged by Peter and Ann Smyth, who have lodged a third-party appeal with An Coimisiún Pleanála.

The proposed development includes the construction of a new timber truss fabrication building, with a stated height of approximately 11.8 metres. Plans also provide for a new staff building, the removal of two existing prefabricated buildings and the demolition of a shed.

The application further includes proposals for new signage, site lighting and other associated site development and ancillary works.

The development is intended to support the operations of Ray Smyth Roof Trusses Ltd, an established Killucan business involved in the manufacture of timber roof trusses and other timber engineering products.

Following the third-party appeal, An Coimisiún Pleanála will now examine the planning application, the local authority’s decision and the grounds of appeal before reaching its own determination.

The appeal is currently listed as due to be decided by December 21, 2026. The case is one of a number of planning matters before the national planning authority which will be closely watched locally.
