Council update Derelict Sites Register
Westmeath County Council’s official Derelict Sites Register indicates that there is a long-running problem with vacant and derelict properties across the county, with entries dating back more than three decades to 1991.
There are 70 properties listed on the Register, the most recent addition being made last month. The local authority website states that derelict sites can have a detrimental impact on the social, economic, commercial and visual aspects on the surrounding neighbourhood.
A review of derelict sites activity in Mullingar, Moate, Kilbeggan and Kinnegad shows a varied pattern of notices and registrations stretching back more than three decades.
In Mullingar, the five recorded sites include properties at Old Ballinderry, Railway Terrace, Ardmore Road, Cullionbeg and the Springfield Housing Development.
The Springfield development is the most recent Mullingar addition, with an intention to enter the property on the register dated July 16, 2026, followed by registration on August 4.
The earliest Mullingar case dates to May 2011, when an intention notice was issued in relation to a property at Old Ballinderry. Other Mullingar registrations followed at Railway Terrace in 2013, Ardmore Road in 2011 and Cullionbeg in 2017.
No Section 11 works-required notice is recorded for any of the five Mullingar properties in the information reviewed. The register does not specify the current removal or closure status of the sites.
Moate has the highest number of entries among the four towns, with eight properties recorded. Its activity ranges from notices issued in 2008 through to the latest Section 8 (7) registration in November 2025 for a property at 23 Toorvalley.
Kilbeggan has seven entries and the longest historical timeline, with activity beginning in 1991. A property described as buildings on the right-hand side of the Mullingar Road was subject to an intention notice in May 1991 and entered on the register that July. A works notice was subsequently issued in 2008.
There are also seven recorded entries in Kilbeggan, including properties on Dublin Road, Lower Main Street and Mullingar Road, as well as Brewery House.
Kinnegad has five entries, with activity concentrated between 2009 and 2020. Recorded locations include the Tanyard, Trim Road, a pub at the junction of Trim Road and The Bungalow on Mullingar Road.
The register shows multiple intention or registration dates in some cases, which can indicate renewed notices or re-registration activity.
