Cathedral maintenance works bill to come to €340,000

More than €340,000 is being invested in major maintenance, safety and infrastructure works at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Mullingar, as the landmark building celebrates 90 years since its opening.

At Masses in the parish on Sunday, the newsletter explained that works, which are due to be completed by the middle of this month, include the installation of a new heating system, cleaning of the Cathedral’s exterior and an upgrade of its sound system.

The new heating system is the largest element of the project, costing approximately €285,000.

The newsletter explained that a report prepared by Coffey Consulting Engineers in 2025 found that replacing the Cathedral’s old boilers was the most economical option, and parishioners learned that as part of the safety works, the old boilers have now been permanently removed from the Cathedral basement.

A new purpose-built building has been constructed at the rear of Cathedral House to accommodate the heating equipment.

The exterior of the Cathedral is also currently being cleaned, at an approximate cost of €60,000.

Meanwhile, the Cathedral’s sound system has been upgraded at a cost of more than €20,000. The upgrade is intended to provide clearer sound during liturgies and other celebratory events.

The works are being undertaken in the year in which the Cathedral marks the 90th anniversary of its opening. The parish is now appealing to parishioners and friends of the Cathedral to consider making a contribution towards the cost of the works, where they are in a position to do so.
