Second half goals from Murray, Rabbitte and Seery seal victory
MJS Building and Dev U16 Football Div 4 final
St Joseph’s 4-7
Tyrrellspass 1-10
St Joseph’s and Tyrrellspass met in the Division 4 Championship Final in Milltownpass on Sunday, October 4. The match was played in perfect conditions on a beautiful playing surface.
St Joseph’s started brightly and took the lead with a left footed finish from Shay Seery on the right hand side.
Tyrrellspass equalised soon after but St Joseph’s took control and went two points clear with points coming from Daniel Murray and Conor Looram. Momentum switched to Tyrrellspass midway through the first half when Oran Cunniffe found the net after a defensive mix-up.
However, St Joseph’s responded and finished the half well. Daniel Murray finished to the roof the net for an important goal, followed by a point soon after to leave the minimum between the sides at half-time: St Joseph’s 1-4, Tyrrellspass 1-3.
The second half was a more open affair with both sides pushing hard to assert control. St Joseph’s started well and on the restart broke forward to gain a foothold on proceedings with Daniel Murray claiming his second major. Shay Seery then scored his second point from a tight angle.
Credit to Tyrrellspass, who worked hard to get back in the game. James Tierney, Cillian Daly and James Murphy kept the score board ticking over, but St Joseph’s always seemed capable of finding the target when attacking. Jamie Rabbitte finished to the net after good work by Luke McDonnell from midfield. Cillian Daly then scored an excellent two-pointer to leave two points between the sides, and it was all to play for.
St Joseph’s once again finished strongly, with points from Luke McDonnell (free) and a left-footed effort from Jamie Rabbitte. Shay Seery put the icing on the cake with an emphatic finish to the corner of the net in injury time.
Great celebrations ensued when referee Eoin Gorman blew the final whistle. Sean Sheridan presented the cup to co-captains Conor Looram and Luke McDonnell.
