Firms put work in for jobs fair

A Job and Training Fair held at Harbour Place Shopping Centre, Mullingar, last Thursday as part of National Work and Skills Week, attracted a lot of interest. Employers, training agencies and Intreo personnel were on hand to help people find work and training opportunities and connect with employers who are hiring.

Eithne McCawley, Employer Relations officer with Intreo in Mullingar, who organised the event, was delighted that so many companies and organisations had taken part.

She also thanked Denis Hogan, manager of Harbour Place Shopping Centre. “He has been brilliant and could not have been more helpful,” she said.

Among those on stalls at the Fair was Mark Wilson from the Lidl Distribution Centre in Mullingar. He was delighted with the level of “footfall and interest”. Mark said Lidl have 76 stores across Ireland, as well as their main warehouse in Mullingar, and they are looking for staff.

Martin Murphy from Westcare Homecare said it is “impossible to get staff”. He too was pleased with the response. “The footfall has been excellent,” he reported, adding that it was great to be there with other companies.

Bronagh Cafferkey and Helena Foy of the Mullingar Local Area Employment Service were also pleased with the turnout and reaction to the fair. They help people get back into employment, offering free, confidential and practical support to those looking for work or to train or learn new skills.

The Job and Training Fair ran from 10am to 1pm on Thursday. The aim was to bring together those looking for work and those looking for workers.

The event gave people the chance to explore full time, part time and flexible job opportunities in the local area, as well as courses available to support jobseekers and improve their skills.
