Community meeting planned over proposed Mullingar biomethane plant
A public meeting will take place in The Downs this evening (Tuesday, October 27) to discuss concerns surrounding a proposed biomethane plant at Newdown, The Downs, on the outskirts of Mullingar.
The meeting is scheduled for 7.30pm at The Downs Community Hall, with organisers urging residents from across the community to attend and share their views on the proposal.
A campaign poster opposing the development highlights concerns about the potential impact on nearby homes, schools and local amenities. Campaigners claim the area is densely populated, with a school and football grounds located within a few hundred metres of the proposed site.
Other issues raised include potential odour emissions, air quality, public health and the wider environmental impact of the development.
The poster also raises concerns about increased traffic, noise, waste and the visual impact of the proposed facility. It claims the plant could generate more than 40 heavy goods vehicle movements into and out of the site each day.
Organisers say the meeting will provide an opportunity for residents to become informed about the proposal and express their concerns about its potential effects on the local area.
The campaign is urging people to protect the community, with particular emphasis on the potential implications for children, families and vulnerable residents.
Meanwhile, the poster identifies November 5, 2026, as the final date for objections to the proposal, encouraging those with concerns to take note of the deadline.
Residents are being urged to attend the meeting and engage with the issue as the community considers the potential implications of the proposed biomethane development.
