Brosna Art Group brush up for annual exhibition

Brosna Art Group are about art, of course, but there are also social and educational sides to being involved, members have said ahead of their annual exhibition.

This year’s show opens in the Greville Arms Hotel, Mullingar for a preview from 11am on Thursday November 12, and remains open till the official launch drinks reception from 7.30pm. It continues on the Friday (11am-9pm) and Saturday (11am-6pm).

The exhibition will feature a variety of works from 11 members of the group, through which they highlight their responses to their environment, and their personal experiences of the local landscape and those further afield.

The many works on offer use a variety of media, and subjects vary from landscape and animals to floral and abstract, each showcasing the unique skills and talents of the individual artists. They are a treat for the viewer, promise the artists.

One of those, Patricia Leogue, said: “The success of the group is due to the support of the local community who take time to call in to view the exhibits, have a chat and maybe go home with a lovely painting, so please join us for our official opening on Thursday November 12 at 7.30pm.

“We are open Thursday 11am-7pm for a preview before our official opening at 7.30pm, Friday 11am-9pm and Saturday 11am-6pm.”

Members of the group work throughout the year in anticipation of their exhibition, meeting up weekly to paint together.

Ann McGowan said: “It’s nice and social as well, meeting during the week. It would be one morning a week, not all year, but we do it during the year for maybe six weeks of sessions at a time.

“We enjoy the hobby and we kind of help each other along, with advice, you know, ‘what do I do with that’ or maybe ‘put a different colour, try this’, you know, different things. We’d all be encouraging each other.”

In previous years, the exhibition would coincide with a charity raffle organised by the group; this year members decided to have a donation box for Mullingar Lions Club and those in attendance are encouraged to give what they can.

Patricia concluded: “We would like to thank North Midlands Credit Union Mullingar for their support each year, Westmeath County Council through their local enchantment grant and support grants, Picturesque Framing, and John McCauley for the photos.”
