Obituaries: The late Anthony Buckley; The late Kathleen McGinty

The death has occurred peacefully of well-known Mullingar native, Anthony Buckley, Canal Line, Dublin Bridge, who, for many years, was closely associated with a number of sporting organisations in the town, including Mullingar Town AFC and Mullingar Golf Club.

An accomplished footballer, he lined out with the side for more than two decades and remained a fervent supporter after his playing career ended.

The late Mr Buckley was also a distinguished badminton player and represented Westmeath on the courts over a number of years.

Anthony, who worked as a psychiatric nurse in St Loman’s Hospital, Mullingar, throughout his working life, took to the game of golf after his retirement and proved himself quite adept at the small ball also.

His love of golf, for which he claimed numerous prizes at Mullingar Golf Club, was fostered by a passion for pitch and putt, with the grounds of the hospital formerly being home to one of the best courses in the midlands.

One of the highlights of Anthony’s golfing career was his involvement in the Mullingar team that won the Central Towns Cup in 1981.

Known as ‘Charlie’s Angels’, the team were sprinkled with excellent golfers and the late Mickey Gilmartin, Donald Bell and Colm Connaughton, were among his teammates.
