Sharp jump in infections
There has been a sharp increase in the number of Covid-19 infections detected in ths country in the past 24 hours, with 500 new cases added to the total.
There are now 6,574 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.
Sadly there were also 28 Covid-19-related deaths recorded, the latest figures from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre show.
Yesterday there were 25 deaths and 365 new cases.
Of the 28 deaths recorded since yesterday, there were 15 females and 13 males. The median age was 81 and 19 of the 28 had an underlying condition.
Of the 263 deaths that have occurred so far, 214 were in patients with underlying conditions.
Some 187 cases (72 per cent) occurred in a hospital environment and 30 of the patients who died were in an Intensive Care Unit.
Analysis of the figures shows that of the 6444 cases there had been by midnight on Tuesday last, 1,521 required hospitalisation and of that number, 230 were admitted to ICUs.
Some 257 of the deaths to that date had occurred in hospitals.
The number of healthcare workers infected was 1,765, and the median age of all patients was 48.
More women have been affected to date than men – 53.2 per cent versus 45.4 with a further 1.5 per cent being unknown.
