The late Bridie Hughes

The death took place this week of Mrs. Bridie Hughes of 5 Assumption Villas, Mullingar, who passed away peacefully last weekend after a short illness.Bridie (née Kenny), who was 88, went to her eternal reward in the care of the nurses and staff of the Midland Regional Hospital at Mullingar on Easter Sunday morning last, April 4.Bridie will be remembered for her musical talents when she played at many Midland functions with her late husband Dinny Hughes, who was one of the regions most celebrated musicians for many years. Dinny predeceased Bridie in 1991.Bridie was a native of Tullamore, Co. Offaly where she played in the well known family Kenny Band back in the 1930/40's.Has played in support to many great renown artists like Phil Coulter and the late Dermot O'Brien.She had a great love for the music and played the piano at home every day right up to her death. In latter years she was the organist at the Sunday Masses in the church at St. Loman's Hospital.While her first love for music she was also the mother to a big family of 13. Apart from the music she had many interests outside the home and loved the Bingo.While never actually attending matches she took a great interest in the GAA and in particular the successes of Offaly in hurling and football. She also supported the counties where her family had dispersed to and enjoyed the bit of rivalry between the in-laws.Bridie Hughes was a lady of great religious fervour and had a great word for everyone she came in contact with. She has made many great friends over the generations. She was generous in support to many charity organisations. She will be sadly missed by her friends and her family. Bridie is survived by her sons, Gerard, Joey, John, Michael, David, Vincent and Oliver and by her daughters, Mary, Catherine, Bridie, Rose, Veronica and Dympna, her son-in laws, daughter in laws, grandchildren, sister in law, brother in law, nephews and nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.After reposing at her home on Monday last, Bridie was removed to Gilsenan's Funeral Home on Tuesday, before being received at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar on Tuesday evening. Requiem Mass for the repose of her soul will take place following 12.30pm Mass in the Cathedral on Wednesday afternoon (today), after which Bridie will be interred at Ballyglass Cemetery, Mullingar.
