Fine Gael won't challenge Longford/Westmeath outcome in courts
Fine Gael has decided not to pursue legal action with regard to the outcome of the general election count in Longford/Westmeath.
The decision was confirmed by Fine Gael press office this evening.
A legal challenge was expected after a six-day count in Kenagh saw incumbent FG deputy James Bannon lose his seat, with Labour's Willie Penrose taking the fourth seat in the constituency.
A second recount was called by Bannon who was found to be just a handful of votes behind Penrose on the 13th count, and facing elimination.
The recount concluded that Bannon was six votes behind Penrose, leaving Longford without a TD.
Bannon indicated that he would challenge the outcome in the courts, but the Legan man now appears set to run for election to the Seanad.
