Well-known nun, Sr Finbarr Breslin, has died

The death occurred earlier today, Saturday, of Sr Finbarr Breslin, a woman who dedicated her life to the service of the people of Mullingar, but most especially the women of the town.

Sr Finbarr, a member of the Sisters of Mercy Order was a hardworking person, who believed strongly in the importance of education. Her standards were high, but she shunned the limelight, despite having for decades overseen the Women's Community Projects in Bishopsgate Street, which ran a variety of vocational training courses that equipped women who wanted to pursue careers.

A native of Clonaslee in Co Laois, Sr Finbarr spent most of her religious life in Mullingar, having worked at first on the staff of the hospital in Mullingar before being asked to take up the Women's Community Projects role.

Sadly, towards the end of her life, Sr Finbarr became unwell, and she resided at Newbrook Lodge Nursing Home.

Sr Finbarr will be missed by The Sisters of Mercy Northern Province, as well as by her brother, Bernard her sisters Margaret, Ellen and Bridie; her sister-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and her many friends in Mullingar.
