Mullingar actor Niamh Algar has been nominated for another prestigious film industry award.
A little over a month after she won two gongs at this year's IFTAs, Algar has been longlisted for the British Independent Film Awards' (BIFA) most promising newcomer prize.
Algar has been longlisted for her role as Ursula in the film Calm With Horses. It was for her performance in this film that also she won the Best Actress In A Support Role at the IFTAs.
When BIFA released the longlist for the most promising newcomer prize, Algar tweeted that it was “such a huge honour” to be included.
The year 2020 has been one to remember for Algar, who has firmly cemented her position as one of Ireland's finest acting talents.
In addition to being the first actor nominated for four IFTAs - two of which she won - she has earned rave reviews for her performance as Sue in Ridley Scott's science-fiction TV drama, Raised by Wolves.
Currently filming the Channel 4 true life crime drama, My Name is Lizzie, in which she plays the lead role, Lizzie James.
Undercover police officer James was asked by her superiors to start a relationship with Colin Stagg, the chief suspect in the 1992 murder of Rachel Nickell.
The four part drama will feature verbatim dialogue from the actual investigation, which led to Stagg being mistakenly accused of murder. Nickell's killer, Robert Napper, was convicted in 2008 on the grounds of diminished responsibility.
The head of Channel 4 drama Caroline Hollick said that the series “will shine a light on one of the most shocking stories in modern policing”.
My Name is Lizzie has already been name checked by English magazine Cosmopolitan as “one of the best new TV shows to look out for in 2021”.
