Lidl planning major extension to Mullingar distribution centre
German retailer Lidl has applied for planning permission for a major expansion to its regional distribution centre in Lough Sheever Park, Mullingar.
The application submitted to the council late last month includes details for the expansion of the centre by 19,839 square metres, as well the demolition of both a 2,823 sqm warehouse and a two-storey administration block.
The planning application also includes plans for a new two-storey administration block and a two-storey warehouse management building, as well as 49 additional HGV parking areas.
The centre currently has 43 parking spaces for HGVs.
The new development, if given the green light, would have 98 new staff car parking spaces to add to the 219 spaces already there. In addition to the distribution centre, Lidl operates two stores in Mullingar.
The first Lidl supermarket in the town opened on the old Dublin road in 2000, while in 2014 a second opened on the site of the former Horizon Ballroom on Patrick Street.
Lidl currently has nearly 160 stores in Ireland with plans to reach the 200 mark within the next five years. The firm’s managing director in Ireland is Tyrrellspass native John Paul Scally.
The decision due date for the application for the proposed expansion of the distribution centre is October 22.
