Castle Barna Golf Club notes
Ladies ClubCastle Barna ladies have braved the wind and the rain in the last few weeks to compete in the Annual Vanity Hamper Competition. The first prize for this competition is a Ladies Vanity Hamper sponsored by Ryan"s Pharmacy of Daingean, Co. Offaly.This competition is run over 14 holes for six consecutive weeks. The winner is decided by accumulative scores over any five of those weeks. The past two weeks have seen particularly bad weather conditions with lashing rain and driving wind and yet many of these stalwart ladies have managed to complete the course and bring in some fine scores in the process.Leaders of the competition at present include Mary Quinn and Laura Dempsey from week one and Laura Dempsey and Eileen Wynne from week two. Well done to all who competed and best of luck in the coming weeks.As a result of a questionnaire completed by the Ladies in the club, it was decided to continue with a nine hole competition every Wednesday afternoon. This was to replace the usual summertime Wednesday Competition. A great turn out has taken place at these Wednesday competitions and the results are as follows:October 8 Helen GalvinOctober 15 Jeanette McCormackOctober 22 Ber MaloneNovember 5 Ber Malone.The Ladies Club ran a very successful Open Mixed Hamper (Sponsored by Lumley Cash and Carry) on Friday, October 31 and Saturday, November 1. 13 clubs from the surrounding area and from further a field took part in the competition and we were very lucky to have glorious sunshine on the Saturday. The Gods smiled on us!!.The results are; 1st Ciaran and Sheila O"Sullivan (Birr Golf Club) 2nd Bridie Fay and Daniel Shaughnessy (Castle Barna) and 3rd. Angela Lynch and Michael Brereton (Castle Barna) .Castle Barna Mens Club notesCastle Barna Golf Club held a Mens Open Singles Stableford Competition on Thursday last. This was the first of the weekly opens which will run from now until next March. The lovely sunshine on Thursday morning gathered groups from all the midlands. The winner was Noel Oxley (19) Portarlington with 43 points and in second place was Michael Redmond, Castle Barna (18) also scoring 43 points. Third place went to John Lynch, Castle Barna (8) with a score of 42 points. Looking forward to good weather again next Thursday when all competitiors hope to return for this great value and fun game of golf. The cost is just €5 members and €15 visitors.
