Cesarewitch to stay in Mullingar after Galway move shelved

The Irish Cesarewitch greyhound race is to remain in Mullingar, after a proposal to shift the event to Galway was shelved.

The threat to Mullingar's right to run the premier 600 yard classic came during a revision of fixtures by the greyhound board, reveals Deputy Peter Burke, who said he took “immediate action” on the issue after being contacted by directors of the Greyhound Stadium and numerous breeders concerned about the plan.

"I made a robust submission to the Irish Greyhound Board and had discussions with key stakeholders involved in the process which I am delighted to report have been successful,” Deputy Burke said this week, saying that the race was a flagship event for Mullingar Greyhound Racing Stadium which has hosted it for 18 years.

“It is the pinnacle of the racing calendar at the track and has attracted strong entries and crowds throughout a very difficult period for dog racing,” he said.

“Mullingar Greyhound Stadium has a great brand and offers a great social event for all.

“I have been working on securing funding for addition capital works at the stadium which will increase capacity. I understand planning permission will be submitted shortly with the hope works will commence next year.

“As someone whose family has a strong history in the industry I fully appreciate the contribution the sector makes to the local economy and I continue to work hard to seek further investment and support for Mullingar Greyhound Stadium.

“I am delighted to confirm that the classic is here to stay in Mullingar.”

Deputy Robert Troy raised the matter in the Dáil today, and he said he looks forward to the decision being recinded at the board meeting tomorrow, Thursday, night.
