'The price of a coffee will buy three blocks for a house in Tanzania'

The Mullingar-based Tanzanian Heavenly Homes charity has a long term vision to help people in one of the poorest parts of the world, and a significant contribution to its budget comes from the annual sales of its calendar.

The 2022 edition is now on sale, at Rochforts Superstore on Dominick Street, and John McCauley, the man behind the charity says: “Hello friends, it’s that time of the year and our calendars are now available. They sold well last year and I thank all of you that bought them.”

John has also provided an update on the building programme in Tanzania.

“We have bought one hectare of land and we have started to build accommodation for some of the poorest people we meet in Tanzania.

"The accommodation consists of a bedroom, a clean floor, walls painted white, a window with curtains, a single bed and warm bedclothes. There is also a bathroom with toilet and washhandbasin, a cold water shower and tiled walls.

“On the roof there will be a small solar panel for light only. This accommodation for most people in the area would be like a five-star hotel to us,” said John.

He said the cost of one building as he described above is approximately €4000, including materials and labour.

“If anyone would like to contribute to the building programme, just €3 a month – the price of a cup of coffee – will buy three blocks to start the next house.

“Thank you, good friends, only for your kindness all this would not be happening.”

Supporters can also help by buying the calendar, which costs €10, and all the proceeds will be added to the building fund for Tanzania.
