Two national U18 titles for Olympic BC

Olympic Boxing Club, Mullingar won two U18 All-Ireland titles on Friday night.

In the 48kg. Patsy Joyce received a walk in his final after his opponent, Ciaran O’Keeffe from Golden Gloves, Cork, pulled out of their final bout.

In the 60kg, Jason Nevin had another cracking contest against Brian Gilroy, a very tough kid from Fr Flanagan’s Boxing Club, Kildare, in the final.

Jason had two wins before this bout, beating Blaine Fitzgerald from Dublin in the quarter-finals, and European champion Michael Faulkner from Cork in the semi-finals.

In the final, he came up against a strong, aggressive boxer in Brian Gilroy. They had a great contest, back and forth through the fight, but Jason showed his skill, landing the better punches as the fight went on. At the end, Jason won on a split decision, four judges to one.

Both lads now represent their country in the European U18 championships in Bulgaria from April 12-22. They will attend irish traning on Dublin every Saturday leading up to the European Championships. Both lads also train five nights a week at Olympic Boxing Club, Mullingar.

Olympic Boxing Club, Mullingar picked up seven All-Ireland titles this season, having won five All-Ireland titles in the Boy/Girl 1, 2, 3 Championships in December. The club has now won 49 Irish titles since they opened in the 2014-15 season.

Olympic Boxing Club Mullingar trains five nights a week in Columb Barracks. In two weeks time, they enter another strong team of boxers in the Leinster Boy/Girl 4, 5, 6 Championships.

The boxing club is very busy after two years of no sport because of the Covid pandemic. Well done to all.
