Events planned for St Brigid's Well

Two events are to take place at St Brigid’s Well in Killare this Wednesday, and in preparation for the day’s activities, a cleanup of the site was done by a small team of volunteers on Wednesday of last week.

This Wednesday at 10am, Fr Oliver Devine, PP of Ballymore and Boher, is to celebrate Mass at the site. Children from the primary school in nearby Boher are to join worshippers at the site for the Mass.

Fr Oliver will be back at 7pm, and the Rosary will be prayed, and also the Stations of the Cross.

Among those carrying out the cleanup was Fr Devine, who was joined by Cyril Kiernan, Paddy Kincaid, Seamus McDermott and Netta Murphy.

The Annals of Westmeath cites the 17th century Acta Sanctorum Hiberniae (Lives of the Irish Saints) in its claim that there were three churches at Killare, one of which was Temple Brigid and the second of which was the court of St Brigid.

The book states that it is said that St Brigid made her religious profession at nearby Uisneach, and that “she very probably resided for some time in Killare which was then a town of note”.

Fr Devine says all are welcome to the Mass on Wednesday morning, and to the Rosary and Stations at 7pm.
