Diarmuid Cahill to continue as Westmeath camogie manager
Diarmuid Cahill is to return as Westmeath’s intermediate camogie team manager/coach for the 2023 league and championship campaigns.
The Tipperary native came on board with Westmeath in May 2022 after Offaly’s Albert Kelly stepped down from the role following just five months in the role.
Kilruane McDonaghs clubman Cahill married a Kildare native and ended up a key part of Dave Herity’s backroom team in the Kildare senior hurling setup. Cahill also has family connections to Raharney, which set him on the path to Westmeath.
Cahill has named his backroom team for the 2023 campaign, which includes Olive Weir (Raharney), Alan Aughey (Turin) and David Gavigan, who managed St Brigid’s to a senior camogie semi-final in 2022.
Westmeath chairperson Karen Goldrick (Ringtown) will be the team’s liaison officer, while Laura Heffernan (St Munna’s) is team secretary.
Cahill has also named Mark Scally and Fintan Tynan as team physios, Joey Cleary as strength and conditioning coach, and St Loman’s, Mullingar footballer Ryan Jones as the team’s stats and performance analyst.
Westmeath’s first outing in Division 2A of the Very National Camogie League takes place on February 18 away to Kerry.
They will then face Derry at home on February 25, Meath away on March 4, Laois at home on March 11, and Cavan away on March 25.
Meanwhile, Westmeath’s minor camogie team will have a hugely experienced management setup in 2023, with Westmeath hurling legends Paddy Dowdall (Clonkill) and Darren McCormack (Castlepollard) coming on board as joint managers.
Dowdall and McCormack have also named Denise Muldoon (Clonkill) and Karen Goldrick (Ringtown) as selectors.
Former Clonkill camogie manager Dowdall has a busy year ahead of him, taking charge of St Loman’s, Mullingar’s senior footballers as well as the county’s minor camogie team. With 15 county senior medals across hurling and football, Dowdall is Westmeath’s most decorated club player.
On board with Dowdall is Darren McCormack, who in 2021 managed the Westmeath senior camogie team. McCormack, a four-time SHC medallist with Castlepollard, is like Dowdall a former Westmeath hurler who enjoyed Christy Ring Cup success.
The minor camogie squad’s championship campaign kicks off on March 12 with Westmeath away to Kildare. Subsequently, they are away to Carlow before hosting Laois and Derry. The final game of the round robin stage takes place away to Roscommon after Easter.
