Young talent clear on Ghlúin Nua night

Music, poetry, photography and more, by an inspiring group of young performers, featured at Ghlúin Nua in Cúige Studios in Mullingar on Saturday evening.

The talented team did a fantastic job in all the performances and passion and pride in their work were evident.

The mind behind the event, Jack Gaudet, said he wanted to show the potential of the young talent in Mullingar and to shine a spotlight on it.

He contacted Cúige Studios a month before the gig and they embraced the opportunity to work with Jack and host the event.

Jack is 18 and is interested in musical production at third level education.

The event, held in the Cúige Studios on Dominick Street, had a quirky and artistic aesthetic. Visitors were greeted with a welcoming atmosphere, peaceful music and an antique style, from the entrance, to the furniture, to the seating and the stage – there was a home-made feel, in a positive sense.

Cúige Studios was founded to support arts of all kinds, and the team there host gigs, workshops and performances, where people can meet to enjoy and talk about their art.

Ghlúin Nua began with an exhibition of photography by Ethan Finnane, including ‘Comfortable’, ‘Timing’ and ‘Summit’ – which was shot on Carrauntoohil. There were also fantastic photos of Tracey Maher.

The artists were all friendly and passionate about their art, ready for conversation, happy to answer questions and to explain their work.

As the performances began people moved to their seats, first to enjoy music by Megan Bates and Jack Gaudet (separately), who showed their guitar and piano skills and a lyricism that painted great stories for the audience. Songs performed included ‘Cherrywood’ and ‘Blue Flame’ by Megan Bates and ‘Where Were You?’, ‘Dear Me’ and ‘Trenches’ by Jack Gaudet. Following the music were poetic pieces by David Naughton and a short film by Adam Lowry.

The whole event was well put together from start to finish and a pleasure to attend.
