Mullingar Tidy Towns Annual 1916 Easter Commemoration
The 1916 subcommittee of Mullingar Tidy Towns held its Annual 1916 Easter Rising Commemoration at the Mullingar 1916 Centenary Memorial at noon on Easter Monday, April 10.
The chairperson of Mullingar Tidy Town, Cllr Bill Collentine, paid tribute to those brave Irishmen and Irishwomen, especially those from Mullingar, who served Ireland during the revolutionary period, and said it is important that the commemoration is held in their honour every year.
As the national flag of Ireland gently flew at half mast, Cllr Collentine laid a laurel wreath in remembrance as those gathered paused in silence.
The short ceremony concluded as local historian, Jason McKevitt, raised the flag from half-mast to full mast and Ger O’Connor read the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic.
The Mullingar 1916 Centenary Memorial was unveiled on Easter Monday 2017 by the 1916 Centenary Memorial Sub-committee of Mullingar Tidy Towns. The members of the sub-committee are: Cllr Collentine (chairperson), Mr Mckevitt (historian), Eamon McGowan, Tomas Nally, Mr O’Connor and Willie Collentine Jnr.
