Tidy Town get off to winning start

A combination of Denis Glennon"s brilliance and St. Lomans paucity in front of goal was the catalyst for this 4 point victory.Lennon was virtually anonymous for most of the game but just when his side needed him most he stood up and scored 1-2 to ensure victory for an out of sorts Tyrrellspass. Their win was greatly helped by their opponents hitting 18 wides in total and struggling to get any sort of momentum going at any time. For their part Tyrrellspass did just about enough and on the balance of play probably deserved to win the game and in Glennon had the one real stand out star of the 30 on view. For the most part Senan Russell had done a fine job marking the Tyrrellspass talisman but in the blink of an eye he just cut them open and turned the game around in his side"s favour, a lead they would not relinquish until the final whistle.Lomans could have had a goal in the opening minute when Conor Cochrane was clean through but he blasted his shot well wide of the post to the relief of the Tyrrellspass back line. A spate of booking then took place for pretty minor offences it has to be said before Glennon opened the scoring after a fine solo down the field and a splendid kick. John Brennan then added another moments later when after a foul on Brian Slevin to double the advantage. Conor Lynam halved that deficit on 11 minutes when he was hauled down by Sean Bagnall. The game then descended into dross for the next 15 minutes as neither side could mange any sort of sustained pressure and both were guilty of some awful play and it took a Glennon free to lift the gloom and he followed up moments later with another as the Lomans defence were punished for minor discretions indeed. Lomans only other point before the break came from Conor Cochrane after a good combination between Conor and Ciaran Lynam and himself and at the end of the first half it was 0-4 to 0-2 in Tyrrellspass favour after a poor half hour of football. The game picked up slightly in the second half as St. Lomans particularly began to play a little better and after Willie McGovern brought them within one when he converted superbly from a narrow angled free but all that good work was undone when John Brennan converted a needless free conceded by St. Lomans. McGovern replied again with another free and then midfielder Tommy Lambden drew the Blues level with a super score from distance after a prolonged attack. At this stage it looked as if Lomans would power on and Tyrrellspass looked in serious difficulty but Glennon put them ahead once more with another easy free. Conor Lynam responded in kind to level matters from a free as well and with 15 minutes to go it was anyone"s game. Midfielder Tim O"Reagan put Tyrrellspass in front only for sub Paul Sharry to reply with a fine score for St. Lomans. Then it became the Denis Glennon show and the Tyrrellspass wizard scored 1-2 in the final six minutes. First a point from a superb catch and kick and then a goal where he slipped in along the end line and smashed the ball to the net for the games defining moment. After Conradh Reilly had got one back it was fitting that Glennon finished the match when a defensive error by St. Lomans let him in for the insurance point and victory for his side. There was a moment of controversy late on when Lomans sub John Heslin looked to be dragged to the ground only for his protestations to be waved away. It certainly looked like a penalty but it was all too little too late.Glennon was undoubtedly the star and although he was missing for a long time it is his pace and vision that sees his club home time and again. His goal was class and his 1-6 tally speaks for itself. Shane Arthur had a good game in defence while Adrian Corcoran battled manfully at midfield but those apart it was hard to find another Tyrrellspass man who stood out and still they won by 4, an ominous sign for any other team, that an the fact that Martin Flanagan is on the way back. For St. Lomans Russell Seanie Murphy and Gary Glennon were excellent in defence while Lambden had a fine hour. Up front they struggled however and but for Paul Leonard and sub Paul Sharry they lacked any imagination or guile.Scorers: - Tyrrellspass Denis Glennon 1-6, 3 frees, John Brennan 0-2, 2 frees, Tim O"Regan 0-1.
