Speaking on his final day at J Ryan Hardware in Tyrrellspass, Johnny Ryan told the Westmeath Examiner he’d had a wonderful day, “apart from the weather”, and said he wanted to thank everybody for dropping in to his shop in recent days and weeks to wish him well and to thank him for his work and service over the 42 years he ran the shop.
“But most of all, I would like to thank everybody that supported me all those years, they kept the business going. It has been bought by David Smith and it will reopen in a few weeks’ time. It will be run by Paddy Farrington, a lovely chap, and I wish Paddy all the best in the locality.
“And again, I just want once again to thank everyone; they have been a great support.”
Asked how we would spend his time in retirement, Johnny said he loves country music and he’d be able to go to the Well in Moate more often: “I’ll go to a few race meetings up and down, and relax. I won’t be tied to time.”
