Mullingar RFC U17s Secure Victory in Wexford

In their latest outing, the Mullingar RFC U17 team travelled to Wexford, eager to extend their winning streak. Despite recent inactivity, the team's spirits were high, and after a thorough pitch inspection, the match commenced with Mullingar benefiting from the wind in the first half.

Leveraging the windy conditions, Mullingar's Peader Glennon executed strategic long kicks, confining Wexford within their 22. This tactical play soon bore fruit when Glennon, following impressive carries by Rory O’Brien and Kylan Heffernan, broke through to score the opening try, which he then converted, bringing the score to 7-0.

Wexford's subsequent kick-off fell short, allowing Mullingar to regain possession and swiftly advance into Wexford's territory. A well-orchestrated back line move led to Rory O’Brien strengthening Mullingar's lead with a second try. The team's dominance was briefly challenged when Jake Greene's potential third try was thwarted by a last-minute Wexford intervention.

Undeterred, Mullingar maintained pressure, leading to Darragh O’Brien scoring in the corner after excellent teamwork. A handling error by Wexford offered a rare offensive opportunity, but Mullingar's defence held strong, culminating in Greene securing a try at the half-time buzzer, marking the score at 22-0.

The second half saw Mullingar withstand intense pressure from Wexford, who sought to exploit the wind advantage. However, Glennon's breakaway try further extended Mullingar's lead to 27-0. Darragh O’Brien's subsequent try and Wexford's consolation try in the game's final play concluded the match at 32-7 in Mullingar's favour.

This victory was a testament to the formidable foundation laid by the Mullingar forwards, enabling efficient game management by the halfbacks. Mullingar now stands in a promising position to qualify for the Leinster League semi-final, with the squad showcasing exceptional skill and teamwork throughout the match.
