St Munna’s camogie club celebrate All-Ireland success

A great night of celebration was held in Bloomfield House Hotel on Saturday March 30 as St Munna's Camogie club celebrated their Junior B All-Ireland success.

The Turin side defeated Ulster champions, Crossmaglen, last December in a close-fought encounter. Former St Munna's player and 29th Camogie Association President, Aileen Lawlor, was on hand to present medals. Words of congratulations were expressed by Westmeath Camogie Chairperson, Karen Goldrick, and Uachtarán Cumann Camogaíochta, Hilda Breslin. The Athy-based President spoke of the ambassadorial roles now being played by the team members for future generations.

St Munna's Chairperson and long-serving goalkeeper, Bridget Leavy, spoke on what it meant for the parish and community to be among the best in their sport before MC, Jason Keelan, showed videos of congratulations from social media star Adam Kelly and Off The Ball/Virgin Media presenter, Aisling O’Reilly. There were also mentions for those who could not be there, including selector, Katie Heffernan, who was en-route to Hong Kong with the Irish 7s Rugby squad.

The club organised a host of awards and presentations. Midfielder Catríona Egan took home the ‘Spiorad na Bliana’ award for her positive approach before Abbie Reihill’s injury-time goal in the Westmeath County Final win over Castlepollard was voted ‘Moment of the Season.’ Manager Paddy Maloney then presented the Young Player of the Year to Rebecca O’Neill (St Joseph’s Rochfortbridge student) before Olivia Glynn took the Player of the Year. All awards were player voted.

Captain Sheila McGrath led the players to the stage to present gifts and memorial frames to the guests of honour and the management team – Paddy Maloney, Nikki Clinton, Alan Aughey, and Katie Heffernan. Photographer Conor Brennan was also acknowledged for his work with the team. A standing ovation greeted the final gift to Rose Glynn, the club's longest-serving member, with granddaughter and player, Alice Galvin, doing the honours. The party continued with chants of ‘one more year’ in the hope of swaying the retiring Bridget Leavy.
