Open Scotch Foursomes

The popularity of the Des Maguire Open scotch foursomes again manifested itself with a fine time sheet of members and visitors on Sunday last. The scoring was very good with winning scores better than recent years or even before the course upgrade. When all scores were competed, the winners were declared as Mick Duffy (12) and Lily Gilleran (16) with a superb sixty four point four, and they won by less than a half shot from Mick McCarthy (12) and the in-form Kay Browne (25); third spot went to Bernie Kelly and recently returned from a cruise around Bethpage Black golf course, Eamon Shaw. The best gross prize went to mother and son combination of Catherine and Bernard McDonnell. Compliments to all who remained in the club house for the presentation of prizes; it made for a very good social occasion.Full ResultsWinners: Mick Duffy (12) and Lily Gilleran (16) 64.4 nett; runners up: Mick McCarthy (12) and Kay Browne (25) 64.8; third Eamon Shaw (11) and Bernie Kelly (14) 65.8; best gross: Bernard (4) and Catherine McDonnell (17) 78.Bloomfield House Hotel Gents" Open Singles on Sunday nextThe attraction on Sunday next is the Bloomfield House Hotel gents" open day and those who are not interested in the GAA in Croke Park will find a few slots available on the time sheet in the afternoon.Long HandicapThere was a good turnout as usual on Thursday last for the weekly long handicap event - this time kindly sponsored by Ann and John Fagan - over fifteen holes and despite the blustery evening the scoring was quite hot. The winner of first prize, and his first visit to the enclosure was Martin McCormack with an excellent thirty seven points off 21 handicap. The runner up, in a rich vein of form at the moment also with an impressive score (35 points) was Tommy Lyng, also off 21 handicap, while the popular winner of the third prize was Eamon Galligan (18) with a very creditable thirty three. Presentation takes place on this Thursday evening.Ladies BranchA few gremlins came out to play with the ladies last week. First, Wednesday"s competition had to be postponed when a deluge of Bethpage proportions engulfed the fairways and rendered the course unplayable. Later in the week, our neighbours from Tullamore dashed the hopes and dreams of our Junior and Senior Foursomes teams recording convincing wins in the process. Of course all is not lost and just as the game demands that we recover from a duffed shot, so we will pick ourselves up and look brightly to the future.  At the time of writing the Intermediate Cup are taking on The Heath with the Challenge Cup team to follow. Matches involving the Minor Cup the Junior Cup and the eternally youthful Boyne Trophy team are all on the horizon. With strong players featuring throughout, we feel sure that we can achieve some great results this year.Club fourballFinally, the draw for the Club Fourball sponsored by Michael O"Grady has been posted in the locker room. First round matches are to be completed by July 12.  Lowest handicap player reverts to scratch with each of the other players to play off ¾ s the difference.
