President's prize deferred due to conditions

On Friday last, we held the Captains' (Damien Daly and Geraldine Bell) mixed foursomes competition for some beautiful prizes presented by the captains and it proved to be a very enjoyable and successful event. The format was straight mixed and was reduced to fifteen holes to facilitate the fine entry with the shortening evening light wise and produced some very good scoring. The popular winners with a return of 56.42 nett were Eddie Shaw and Miriam McManus (a specialist of sorts in this event), who had a fraction of a shot to spare from a new mixed foursomes combination, Hugh O'Neill and Siobhan Ruane. The best gross prize was won by siblings Bernard and Jeanette McDonnell while third nett went to husband and wife pairing of Ted and Margaret Eighan. The day was rounded off with a successful social evening.Captains' Mixed Full Results -Winners: Ed. However the competitions committee has rescheduled it for Sunday next, August 30, 'though some adjustments may be needed on the B.R.S. Your cooperation in the matter would be most appreciated. As a result of the change of date the play-off will take place on Saturday, September 5.Last Saturday's returns will stand (details of which cannot be revealed, of course, until the first round is complete). The Late James MaguireIt is with great sadness and regret that I note the passing to his eternal reward of one of our members, James Maguire at the week-end. James, who was ill for the past number of months, bore his sickness with dignity and bravery. James loved his golf and came out on the Bank holiday week-end to watch the annual scratch trophy competition. He has joined that great course in the sky, where there are no bad breaks, I'm sure. He will be greatly missed by his large circle of friends within the club and elsewhere. To his heartbroken wife and family, we extend our deepest sympathy.Seniors' golfOur gents' seniors have had their summer break from weekly competition but will be up and running on Tuesday September 8th, when we entertain Strandhill golf club seniors in the first leg of our annual challenge. On Tuesday 15th we kick off our season of weekly golf with a competition and the annual seniors' Captain's dinner. For further information check the relevant notice boards.Inter club sceneOur men had mixed fortunes over the week end on the inter club scene; the senior cup squad were pipped by the host club team in the semi final in Laytown & Bettystown on Saturday last. Our Walker Cup side were narrowly beaten out of second place in Trim and our Castle Barna Shield side had a very good win over Newbridge as they continue on their way in defence of their crown.Crumlin Hospital RumbleMembers are reminded that the Leinster final of the annual Crumlin Hospital fundraising rumble will be held in Mullingar golf club on Thursday September 10th - the prize for the winning team is a place in the All Ireland final in Portugal in October. The local qualifier takes place from August 25th to September 5th. So get in early.Ladies BranchWednesday's competiton sponsored by the Pearse Street Unicare Pharmacy was a game of two halves. The morning and early afternoon groups experienced the by now customary soft conditions accompanied by clement weather. The evening groups on the other hand battled through a deluge of biblical proportions that rendered the course unplayable in a matter of minutes.Kay Browne was one of those who teed it up in the afternoon and resfused to be deterred by the rising flood waters and descending daylight over her closing holes. Kay shot a truly magnificent score of 39 points even managing to record par on the last hole as other groups abandoned the course demoralised and soaked to the bone.Second place went to the ever radiant Mary McCauley with a fine score of 35 points. Anne Marie Fagan had a tidy tally of 21 points for gross. Miriam McManus, a player beginning to find some form of late, carded 33 points to secure third. The difficulty of the course was once again reflected with a high standard scratch rating of 76 recorded for the competition.Result1st Kay Browne (24) 39 points2nd Mary McCauley (13) 35 pointsGross Anne Marie Fagan (13) 21 points3rd Miriam McManus (19) 33 points
