Teams canal walking race

A fundraising event for TEAM, Temporary Emergency Accommodation Mullingar, is set to take place on the Royal Canal on Saturday November 1 to find the fastest man and woman in Mullingar.

The Canal Walking Race start at 11am, and consists of a three-circuit race called The Speedster, and a two-circuit race called The Strollers, around the canal from the Green Bridge to the Dublin Bridge, commencing in the Harbour Street Shopping Centre car park.

It’s €50 for a team of five to take part, including four walkers plus a manager, with the manager responsible for keeping the time of their team.

“It’s walking, fast walking, and there will be prizes for the fastest man and fastest women at the end of the race, as well as the fastest team and fastest stroller,” says PRO Sean Bond. “There will also be a general prize drawn from a hat for those taking part.

“TEAM is a charity formed in Mullingar in 2009. It has an 11-unit hostel for homeless women and children – they can stay up to six months and during that time they have a specially assigned care worker who works with each family to take them to the next step. There are a lot of interventions while they are staying with TEAM.

“It’s charity which was founded by a number of Mullingar citizens and it’s struggling for money. We have a big shortfall in our funding and that’s why we’re planning a number of events over the coming months, starting with the search for the fastest man and woman in Mullingar.

“It’s a fun event and there will be refreshments. We’d like to see as many teams as possible taking part, we’re hoping to have 50, to raise €2,500, and any sponsorship on top to that would be a bonus (sponsor cards are available).

“I’d like to point out that people taking part will be fundraising for a charity which is locally based. We cater for four counties here in Mullingar and it’s a wonderful story to see so many people being helped. “It will be a fantastic event, great exercise and great fun, so come along and get involved,” says Sean.
