Pretty Chicks exhibition opens next week at Atrium Gallery

Mullingar youth project exhibition in Atrium Gallery, County buildings,  Mullingar.

An exhibition of art works by the Pretty Chicks group from Mullingar Youth Project opens next Thursday (April 4) at the Atrium in Áras an Chontae in Mullingar.

The opening is at 6.30pm on Thursday.

It is the group’s first exhibition of work showing their talents.

The exhibition will be on display until April 12 (9am-5pm).

The artists are girls aged between eight and 12, and their group – named Pretty Chicks – are from the Mullingar Youth Project and Youth Work Ireland Midlands, based in Grange Youth Centre.

The group worked with artist Jason Turner over several months, taking a look a several disciplines including pointillism, pop art, collage work.

They completed an abstract piece as a group and created individual large canvas art works.

The paintings all encapsulated the styles and concepts laid out over the course of the learning process.

All were the creative ideas of the children involved and incorporated their individual styles, influences and painting skill.

They have created an excellent array of paintings that are bright and colourful and their tutors hope this is the beginning of a new painting adventure for all involved.
This activity was funded through the artist in the community grant supplied by Westmeath Arts Council, and the group would like to express their “fondest gratitude to Miriam Mulrennan and Elizabeth Kerrigan at the arts office”.

The project also couldn’t have been achieved without the strong support of everyone working or involved with Youth Work Ireland Midlands, expressly Catherine McEntee centre manager, and Mary Creevy, youth worker.

They encourage everyone to go along to the opening night or drop in during the two weeks of the exhibition for a look at the new works.
