Mullingar Harriers brother and sister win 10km races at Lough Sheelin Challenge

On Sunday last the glorious weather brought 185 athletes out at Crover House for the Lough Sheelin 16 Mile Challenge and 10k run.

Athletes came from as far away as Moyvalley AC (Mayo ), St Laurence O'Toole (Carlow) and Enniskillen AC, as well as the usual great support from neighbouring counties and local people.

Michael Canty from Moyvalley AC led the way in the 16 mile race with a blistering time (1hr 36 mins 50 secs) to take the men's title followed closely by Niall Smith (Shercock AC ), who has been runner up in this event previously.

In the ladies race Sonia Tobin Reilly cruised to victory in about two hours. The 16 mile and 10k races started at the same time but in two locations so that the time above the gantry was common for both events.

In the 10k race, brother and sister Gerry Gavin and Linda Cunningham (Mullingar Harriers) won the men's and ladies categories respectively.

St Brigid's AC would like to express their gratitude to everyone who took part, to the volunteers who helped out, and to Crover House and Connie Reilly for the use of their wonderful facilities and the hot meals they provided post race.
