The death has occurred of Mary Bennett, from Newdown, The Downs.
Mrs. Bennett (nee Corrigan), died peacefully at the Regional Hospital in Mullingar on June 26, having fallen ill just three weeks previously. She was 82.
A native of Springfield in Mullingar, Mrs. Bennett worked in St. Loman's Hospital before her marriage to her husband, Patrick, who predeceased her seven years ago.
Upon her marriage, she moved to The Downs, and she lived there ever since.
Sadly, sixteen years before her death, Mrs. Bennett had an accident which left her in a wheelchair. Nonetheless, that did not daunt her, and she lived life to the fullest of her ability since then, still availing of lifts to town from family members to make her way around town, and engage in a bit of window shopping. She was also extremely fond of her pet dog, Lucky.
A deeply religious woman, she travelled twice to Lourdes, and was several times in Knock.
The removal of remains took place on Sunday June 27 from Gilsenan's Funeral Home to St. Paul's Church, where the remains were greeted by Fr. Colm Browne, and by Fr. Brendan Corrigan, Mrs. Bennett's cousin.
Fr. Browne also celebrated the funeral Mass, following which the remains were interred at Marlinstown Cemetery.
Mrs. Bennett is survived by her children, Patrick, Anthony, Christy, Theresa, Oliver, Evelyn and Caroline, and also by her brother, George, who lives in Canada, as well as by her sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives neighbours and friends.
