Mullingars water fairy gets prime time slot

Mullingar's 'Water Fairy' made an appearance on Prime Time last night.

The unidentified 'Fairy' and another man were recorded removing a water meter from outside a home in a Mullingar housing estate.

Wearing a hood to hide his identity, the anti-water charges activist, who the Westmeath Examiner interviewed in early November, told Prime Time that his services have been in demand in recent weeks. He added that he started removing meters at householders' requests to "highlight the issue" and to get Irish Water to put back in sealed units.

"I have been doing quite a few around Mullingar, Edenderry and Kinnegad. It's mostly from people who are concerned because the metres can be removed so easily. In the last three or four weeks I have removed around 60. I am totally aware of the Water Services Act and that I can go to jailed for removing them but I also feel that the way the meters are installed they are a danger to the public."
