High alert for snow and freezing conditions at christmas

Now that we are a little closer to the time, it looks certain that snow and freezing temperatures are to set in across Ireland from St Stephen’s Day, onwards.

For the last number of weeks the headlines have been taken up with end-of-days warnings about “polar vortexes” and the coldest winter in fifty years, something which is bandied about every year.

However, while Christmas Day will be cold, it will generally be settled, but on St Stephen’s Day this is all set to change with the mercury dropping to freezing conditions.

On Saturday, snow showers will develop bringing a severe wintery outbreak, due to a mass of arctic air over the north Atlantic, combined with a dropping jetstream.

The European forecast model is showing severe winter weather headed for Ireland coming from the northwest. Anyone travelling around this time should be on high alert and take precautions. More updates will be given closer to the time.
