The inaugural Mullingar Half Marathon takes place on St Patrick’s Day, March 17 2015, at 11am.

The event will add a new exciting aspect to the St Patrick’s Day parade and ensure an energetic start to the day’s celebrations. It promises to be a fun filled day for both competitors and their friends and families – although the competitors have a bit of work to do first.

There will be entertainment specific to the event and also the colour, noise, fun and atmosphere that one would expect with the Mullingar St Patrick’s Day parade. This is a great challenge to kick-start your fitness goals after the Christmas break.

The half marathon organising committee are committed to creating a fun, enjoyable and well-organised race. It is intended that the event would become a firm fixture on the racing calendar, so a fantastic effort is being made to ensure that the complete event is of a high quality.

The race has already secured the support of a number of prominent athletes (details will be revealed closer to the date). The event also has a dedicated website, Facebook page and Twitter account, allowing competitors and visitors to interact and keep up to date with the latest news.

The organising committee are also delighted to be working closely with the ISPCC for the event, and it is hoped to raise funds for Childline, which provides a 24-hour listening service for children up to the age of 18, and seeks to empower and support children using the medium of telecommunications and information technology.

The Childline phone service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and receives some 1,800 calls per day. These are answered by volunteers and staff who are trained to listen and understand young people. Young people contact the service for a wide range of reasons, such as physical abuse, mental health, bullying, sexuality, everyday chat and lots of other issues.

Due to funding difficulties Childline’s night service is under threat. All proceeds from the event are going directly to Childline and this will be crucial to their efforts to maintain the night service. Competitors, their friends and families will enjoy the best of what Mullingar has to offer.

The competitors will experience the unspoiled bog land area to the east of the town and will also run alongside the beautiful Royal Canal, their friends and families will be able to view the race from a number of excellent vantage points or enjoy the local eateries, hotels and shops where they will receive a great Mullingar welcome. There is currently a special online entry fee of €30 for those who enter precisiontiming.net. However entries are limited, so register early to avoid disappointment.

Our training partner, Maurice Looby Fitness, has provided a training plan, which is on our website and will allow runners of all abilities to work towards competing in the event. Our main sponsor, the Annebrook House Hotel, has made facilities available to allow competitors to pick up their race numbers the night before in the hotel and it is also offering a special rate for those wishing to stay overnight in the hotel for the event.
