Information evening for tidy towns groups

Billy Flynn, ecologist and adjudicator for Tidy Towns, is the guest speaker at information evenings for Tidy Towns groups in the Greville Arms Hotel, Mullingar on Monday March 2 and in the Prince of Wales Hotel in Athlone on Thursday March 5 (both at 7pm).

Mr Flynn will give advice on the best approach to completing the application form and will also go through the categories within the Tidy Towns competition.

Speaking to the Westmeath Examiner, he said: “I’m delighted to be working with Westmeath council on this project, it’s part of gearing up for the national Tidy Towns competition.
This is Ireland’s biggest environmental project, it involves hundreds of thousands of voluntary hours every year and it’s amazing to see the impact on villages towns, and even cities now, across the country.

Mr Flynn said he will be “talking groups through what the competition really comprises now, because there have been changes in recent years and there are eight categories now, and about how to submit their entry, as it’s a bit more complex – though it’s also easier, as you can enter online and there is lots of information on the website”.

Ruth Maxwell, Environment Department, added: “These evenings are being hosted to assist groups in planning for their area and help them identify the local options and opportunities within their areas.”

The evenings are part of Westmeath County Council’s environmental awareness programme and are free to attend but booking is essential
