Shaw and fay made honorary members of lakeside wheelers

In a first in the history of the Lakeside Wheelers Damien Shaw and Jenny Fay were made honorary lifetime members due to their stellar achievements in the cycling world.

Both natives of Mullingar, Damien, who recently claimed the Irish Road Race Cycling Championship, and Jenny, the Australian and Irish mountainbike champion, started their cycling careers with the Lakeside Wheelers.

“It’s a great honour for me,” said Shaw, a former Paralympian, who now plans to take a shot at the Rio 2016 Olympics with the Irish four man team pursuit squad.

“I’m moving away from the Paralympics. I can’t see myself cycling a whole lot longer and this might be the only chance I’d get to be at my peak.

Fay, who now calls Australia’s Canberra home, said it was a proud moment not only for her, but her family and the club itself.

“It’s just such a proud moment. It’s fantastic to be honoured for my achievements, to have them celebrated back here in Ireland.

“I remember my first outing with the Lakeside Wheelers 15 years ago, the year 2000. Fifteen years later I didn’t think I was going to be honoured with this, so I’m really happy.”
Fay says the thrill of endurance cycling is the personal challenge it presents.
