Raharney up 11 and top three rankings unchanged in tidy towns

They may not have come top of the table, but the residents of Raharney wound up with plenty to cheer about when the results of this year’s SuperValu Tidy Towns competition were released, on Monday.
As in other years, the top three spots on the table went to Ballinahown (314 marks), Tyrrellspass (296 marks) and Glasson (288 marks).
Raharney, however, recorded the largest jump, winning itself an additional 11 points, to bring it to 276 points, and seventh place out of the 31 Westmeath towns and villages entered in the competition.
The national award this year has gone to Letterkenny in Co Donegal. Clonegal Co. Carlow claimed the award of Ireland’s Tidiest Village. Other winners included Listowel, Co Kerry receiving the award for Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town, Westport Co. Mayo received the award of Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town, while Letterkenny was also declared as Ireland’s Tidiest Large Urban Centre.
However, a glitch meant that the full book of results didn’t go up on the Tidy Towns website, meaning a wait for details of other awards made this year.
Athlone has come in ahead of Mullingar in the rankings, with a score of 281.
It holds 4th place on the overall Westmeath table.
Mullingar scored 267, and is in 13th place, and the local committee are delighted to have seen their marks go up by four from last year’s figure.
“This is seen as a reflection of the work put in by the previous committee and also the great work put in by the TÚS and CE scheme teams and workers who did such sterling work especially at the Green Bridge section of the canal, where an overgrown path has been restored, a flower bed put in and many flowers planted in the area making it a very attractive area,” the committee said in a statement, going on to thank the local cub scouts for their Trojan work in cleaning and clearing litter at the canal and thanking the Mullingar public and the County Council for their support.
