Exploring Mental Health Through the Lens opens tomorrow

New expo in mullingar library by snap happy group

Exploring Mental Health Through the Lens is an exhibition in Mullingar Library running from Thursday October 8 to Thursday October 15.

Mullingar Mental Health Association and Athlone Mental Health Associations have come together with the Midland Regional Youth Services Ltd to promote World Mental Health Day October 10.

The 2015 theme is Dignity in Mental Health. Snap Happy is a newly established photography group that has been meeting in the Mullingar Library and consists of approximately 10 members.

The general goal behind the group is to promote wellness through opportunities to meet people; learn new skills; take part in something the group are interested in; develop individual roles and healthy routines and most importantly have fun and not take themselves too seriously!

The exhibition will also display some quotes from the group which demonstrates that being part of a group like photography, can have a positive impact on one’s wellness and recovery.

Each individual artist used a different camera to capture images, mostly around Mullingar. The variation of camera equipment has extended from mobile phones to bridge cameras to DSLRs.

Photography is one of the most accessible form of art, thus making it one of the strongest ways of expressing a person’s feelings, emotions and personality.

From the composition and lighting to the end presentation each individual photograph is nurtured by the photographer. Ultimately each photographer has captured their positive mental health moments in time.

The exhibition will be launched by the group at 6.30 pm on Thursday 8 of October and all are welcome to attend.

Westmeath Libraries also stock a number of positive mental health books which are available in the healthy reading sections.
