Warnings in place as Storm Barney arrives.

Warning: Wind speeds of 110kph predicted for Westmeath

Storm Barney is set wreak havoc over the next eight hours with the worst to hit Westmeath this afternoon and evening.

Wind speeds are expected to peak between 100 - 110kph in Westmeath.

That’s according to Cathal Nolan of the Midlands Weather Channel.

“The max speeds will affect Galway, Clare, Limerick, Laois and on into the east coast this evening - anything from 100 - 120kph,” Cathal tells the Westmeath Examiner.

“This is certainly a severe storm for the midlands with the potential to cause some disruption such as falling trees and power outages,” he warns.

Cathal recalls some of the highest speeds to hit the midlands took place in February last year, around Valentines Day, when wind speeds of 150kph were recorded.

He attributes this spell of stormy weather to the location of the Jet Stream which has been sitting directly over Ireland during the last week.

If you’re making a journey today make sure to take care while out and about folks!

Weekend

Cathal says a major change in the weather is forecast for the weekend and on into next week.

Conditions will turn much colder, below normal, with frost, ice and even the chance of one or two wintery showers.
